What is Ganapathi Homam?
Ganapathi Homam is a ritual performed with a haven of fire (agni)  to propitiate Lord Ganapathi. Ganapathi Homam is virtually performed before every other homam since Lord Ganesha or the God with the elephant head, is considered the obstacle-remover and everything starts with a pooja to worship this God.
The pandit will invoke Lord Ganapathi through mantras and after performing a brief invocation pooja with a little Lord Ganapathi made with turmeric powder, the main Ganapathi Homam will start. Lord Ganapathi is fond of kozhukkattai (Modak). Usually 11 modaks are offered in the fire. 

About Lord Ganapathi
As mentioned, Ganapathi Homam is performed to please Lord Ganapathi. He came into existence from the five elements, earth, water, air, fire and ether.  He is the leader of Gana's (All living beings). He is the elder of the two sons of Lord Shiva. There are temples exclusively for Lord Ganapathi, though every Shaivite temple will have Lord Ganapathi as the first deity when you enter the temple. Were as in Vishnu temples Ganapathi is worshiped as Thumbikkai aazhvar.  

Why should this Homam be performed?
Another name for Lord Ganapathi is Vigneswara. This means He is capable of removing all vigna or obstacles. That is why performing Ganapathi Homam is important. While performing Homa to Lord Ganapathi we actually please the five elements which are the reason for our existence, once pleased any obstacles which may arise in our way will be destroyed by the Supreme Being.

By performing Ganapathi Homam, you are seeking God’s blessings for the smooth conduct of whatever you are embarking on, a business, building a new home or before marriage.The (Ganapathi Upanishad) mantra about lord Ganapathi in Atharva veda says he Who worshipes Ganapathi with durva grass will become prosperous like kubera.One who worships Ganapathi with parched rice will become more glorious (will have name and fame) He will also reaches the higher consciousness (medhaavaan) filled with retentive capacity of mind When the devotee worshipes Ganapathi with thousands of modhakas(a type of sweet)he will obtain his all desires. One who worships Ganapathi with twigs dipped in ghee get everything as direct blessings from lord ganapathy. While doing abhishekam for Lord Ganapathi . he gives enormous communication knowledge . He who recites this without eating (full day fasting ) on a Chaturthi day becomes vidyavan (full of scholarship). One who comes to know the nature of bramhan’s covering l.e. maya, never has fear!
